Home Assistant
My Raspberry Pi "Server" Rack
Description for Nerds:
This group of DIN rail mounted Raspberry Pi's consists of (L to R) Pi-Hole DNS redirector to block ads, MQTT Broker and Node Red server, and the Home Assistant machine along with its 128GB SSD. The power supply is 5v @ 18 amps, so plenty of juice to add on. The minimum machine recommended for Home Assistant is a Pi4, but I refuse to pay the ransom required to get one released from the gougers. Home Assistant has its own SSL certificate required for remote access and integrations with Smartthings cloud services.
Update:
After a couple of outages with Smartthings cloud services, I decided to update everything and ditch the Smartthings hub. Prices on the Raspberry Pi 5 finally came down to quasi reasonable levels so I got a RPi 5 with 8GB RAM, a Geekworm X1001 PCIe M.2 Key-M NVMe SSD PIP PCIe hat, a 256GB M.2 PCI-e NVME SSD, and a SONOFF Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle. Of course I had to design an enclosure with an integrated DIN rail mount which can be found here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6547538.
Migrating to the new RPi 5 couldn't have been easier. I loaded a base install of HA on the new Pi and restored from a backup of the old Pi. I connected the Sonoff dongle, removed all the Zigbee devices from the Smartthings hub, installed Zigbee2MQTT on HA and paired all the devices. It took a few hours, but I'm no longer dependent on the Smartthings cloud and response times are very short. In Google home I removed the Smartthings integration and created a Google Home to Home Assistant integration (a rather involved process).
